dangerous food for our dogs and cats

Did you know that certain foods are really dangerous for our animals?

Certain foods like chocolate or tuna can be dangerous for dogs and cats, but they're not the only ones. Discover the list of foods that are dangerous for your dog and cat.

1. Chocolate (dog and cat)
Cocoa contains theobromine, which quickly gets into your animal's blood and is very toxic to it. 150 grams of dark chocolate can be enough to kill a 10-pound dog.

Symptoms (vomiting, cramps, diarrhea and, in the most dramatic cases, heart problems that can lead to death) generally appear 4 or 5 hours after ingestion.

2. Milk (dog and cat)
Rich in lactose, milk and dairy products in general can cause vomiting, diarrhea and other bowel problems. Our animals do not have the enzymes to properly assimilate lactose. You cannot digest it properly.

3. Cheese (dog and cat)
Very high in fat, it can lead to inflammation of the pancreas, which in some cases can be fatal.

4. Boiled bones (dog and cat)
If you are able to break, get stuck in the intestine or get stuck in the mouth and throat, all cooked bones must be avoided without exception.

5 and 6. Ham and fatty meat (dog and cat)
Meat, like cheese, is high in fat and can cause pancreatitis. Indeed, they are very high in salt and encourage dogs to drink plenty of water, which leads to stomach changes.

7. The liver (dog)
The liver can cause vitamin A poisoning that, if consumed repeatedly, will destroy your dog's muscles and bones. The first symptoms are constipation, weight loss and bone deformation.

8. Fat (dog and cat)
It can cause inflammation of the pancreas, which can be fatal if not treated in time. In the most severe cases, the animal stops moving and suffers when you press on its stomach. It must then be brought to the vet urgently.

9. Tuna (dog and cat)
Very salty canned tuna promotes kidney damage and can cause heart problems. However, there is tuna that is suitable for your animal at your veterinarian.

10. Raw fish (dog)
It can lead to vitamin B deficiency, which leads to loss of appetite, weight loss and sometimes death. These problems are more common when the dog is regularly fed raw fish.

11 and 12. Onions and garlic (dog and cat)
They damage our companions' red blood cells and can cause vomiting, anemia, tachycardia and even death.

13. The lawyer (dog and cat)
Rich in fat, it can lead to inflammation of the pancreas. In addition, its core is very toxic because it is rich in persine, which is very harmful to the lungs and heart of our four-legged friends. The pit can cause intestinal obstruction if swallowed.

14. Grapes (dog and cat)
Dry or fresh, they can cause bowel disorders and kidney damage. In small dogs, they can cause intestinal obstruction and increase the risk of suffocation.

15. Macadamia nuts (dog and cat)
They contain a toxin that attacks the animal's digestive system, nervous system and bones. A few nuts are enough to cause vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing and cramps. They also increase the risk of suffocation.

16. Raw potato (dog and cat)
Raw potato is rich in calcium oxalate (an insoluble ion crystal) and very dangerous for the urinary tract of our animals. Once cooked, the potato is ideal because it is rich in nutrients.

17. Mushrooms (dog and cat)
Wild mushrooms or those from your garden contain toxins that can have various harmful effects on your companion. These toxins can cause seizures and death.

18. Chestnuts (cat)
They contain tannins that cause diarrhea and vomiting.

19. Chestnuts (cat)
They cause flatulence.

20. Salt (dog and cat)
Ingested in large quantities, an electrolyte imbalance can occur, which leads to cramps, coma, paralysis or even cardiac arrhythmia.

21. Sweet food (dog and cat)
It can lead to obesity, diabetes and dental problems.

22. Xylitol (dog and cat)
It is a sugar substitute that is used in pastries and sweets. The consequences are therefore the same as for sweet food.

23. Raw pie crust (dog and cat)
The yeast present in the dough can cause the stomach to swell and cause considerable flatulence. In extreme cases, it can pierce the stomach or intestines. In addition, the dough fermentation can produce alcohol, which is very harmful to the dog.

24. Moldy or expired food (dog and cat)
These foods can seriously poison your pets. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and cramps.

25. Cat food (dog of course)
Generally too high in protein and fat, it increases the risk of pancreatitis in our dogs.

26. Iron-containing human vitamin preparations (dog and cat)
They can damage the digestive system and be toxic to many organs such as the liver or kidneys.

27. Caffeine (dog and cat)
Very harmful, it speeds up the heart rate. Heart palpitations and heart attacks can be the result. So make sure that your pet does not dip its snout into your cup of coffee or soda.

28. Alcohol (dog and cat)
It interferes with the proper functioning of the brain. A few sips are enough to get your pet drunk. Symptoms can be vomiting and if too much is ingested it can cause heart and nerve problems.

29. Tobacco (dog and cat)
The dog does not smoke, but can find a bum to chew on. It is rich in nicotine and damages the nerves and the digestive system. Symptoms include hyperactivity, vomiting, tachycardia and, in extreme cases, coma, which can lead to death.

30. Marijuana (dog and cat)
It can depress your pet by directly acting on its nervous system, causing vomiting and changing its heart rate.

What to do if your pet has ingested dangerous food?
We have to act quickly. Call your veterinarian, give the name, the composition of the product, the amount consumed and some information about your animal (breed, size, age, health problem ...). It is ideal to intervene as soon as possible (at the latest within two hours after taking it). Your veterinarian can give your animal an injection that can make you vomit if necessary.
